Magician Criss Angel is pulling out of his Las Vegas shows for the first time in seven years to visit his young son who has been diagnosed with leukaemia.

The illusionist, whose real name is Christopher Nicholas Sarantakos, stars in Criss Angel BeLIEve by Cirque Du Soleil at Vegas' Luxor casino-hotel.

A statement from the production said Angel, 47, was cancelling his shows until November 1 to be with his son, one-year-old Johnny Crisstopher Sarantakos, in Australia. Tickets will be refunded or exchanged.

The statement said Johnny was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukaemia earlier this week.

Angel had never missed a show in more than 3,000 performances.
