An Irish holidaymaker is seriously ill in hospital after falling from a balcony in the Costa del Sol resort of Marbella following a night out.

Police alerted paramedics after finding the 23-year-old lying on the ground with head and face wounds and an injury to his knee after being called to the scene just before 3am yesterday morning.

He was staying with his girlfriend at the block he fell from, a popular holiday apartment block overlooking Marbella’s seaside promenade.

She told police he had fallen from a height of more than 20 feet after returning from a night out and losing his balance as he went to lean on a low-level wall while she opened to the door to their apartment.

The Irishman, whose girlfriend is also Irish, was admitted to an intensive care unit at Marbella’s Costa del Sol hospital.

Officials at the hospital were unable to offer any information on his condition yesterday afternoon.

The injured man has not been named.

A routine inquiry into the incident has been opened by a court in Marbella which will now study the police report.

A police source said: “Everything is pointing to the tourist’s fall being accidental.”
