Two nuns, one of whom is from Ireland, have been freed after being trapped in a lift in Rome for three days.

The 58-year-old Irish nun was trapped with her fellow sister, aged 69 from New Zealand, without food and water following an electrical power failure.

The lift at the Marist convent got stuck on Friday.

But no one was in the building over the weekend to hear their cries for help, Italian media reported.

A cleaner discovered them on Monday and called police.

The women said they had "prayed so much".

They were taken for hospital to be treated for dehydration.
