A Muslim convert has attacked German police with a utility knife while shouting "Allahu akbar" after they were called to her apartment in the western city of Essen.

Officers found flags bearing symbols of the Islamic State group (IS) in the property after they overpowered the 53-year-old woman.

Police were called to her apartment on Monday because she was throwing furniture from a window.

After officers broke down the door, they overpowered the woman and used pepper spray after she attacked them with the knife. No officers were hurt.

The woman has been taken to a psychiatric clinic for assessment, while investigators are looking into possible links with extremism.
