Israel rejects Hamas government

Israel's foreign minister has said his country would not negotiate with a new Palestinian government that included the Hamas militant group.

Avigdor Lieberman spoke a day after rival Palestinian factions Hamas and Fatah reached a unity deal in Cairo, Egypt, to end their five-year dispute.

The Israeli minister said the deal marked the "crossing of a red line" and warned that it could lead to a Hamas takeover of the Fatah-run West Bank.

Israel has held peace talks with the Fatah-led government but shuns Hamas and considers it a terrorist group because of its commitment to the destruction of the Jewish state.

The Egyptian-brokered plan calls for the formation of a single caretaker Palestinian government in the coming days.
