Israeli officer's Facebook photographs of bound and blindfolded Palestinians sparks outrage
Tuesday, 17 August 2010
A former Israeli officer has sparked controversy after posing for photos with bound and blindfolded Palestinians and then posting the images on social networking website Facebook.
The former conscript is seen smiling and posing next to the Palestinian men at an undisclosed location in the West Bank.
Former IDF soldier, Eden Abergil, who was relieved of her duties a year ago, posted the pictures under the album name "IDF -- the best time of my life," the Israeli newspaper Ha'aretz reported on Monday.
One of Abergil's Facebook friends wrote under one of the photos, “You look so sexy like that,” according to The New York Times.
"I wonder if he is on Facebook too — I'll have to tag him in the photo," Abergil wrote in response.
Ha'aretz reported that Israeli blogger Lisa Goldman contacted the former soldier via Facebook for comment. Abergil told her: "I don't speak to leftists."
After the photos became public the Israeli military said: "These actions are ugly and callous; details of the incident have been forwarded up the chain of command.
“This was shameful behavior by the soldier. In light of the fact that she was discharged last year, all of the details have been turned over to the commanders for further attention.”
The Palestinian Government Media Center said: "This shows the mentality of the occupier, to be proud of humiliating Palestinians ... It should end, and Palestinian rights and dignity be respected."
All Israeli citizens aged 18 and over must complete an 18-months of military service. Only married, pregnant, religious, or disabled women are exempt.
Around 7,000 Palestinians, including women and children, are currently held in Israeli detention facilities.
