Israeli soldier shoots himself as President Sarkozy leaves Tel Aviv
An Israeli soldier has apparently shot himself during the farewell ceremony for French President Nicolas Sarkozy at Tel Aviv’s Ben-Gurion Airport.
Sarkozy and his wife, Carla Bruni-Sarkozy, were not harmed in the incident.
Israeli radio said the soldier who was shot was stationed 100 meters to 200 meters away. Israel's volunteer medical service, Zaka, said the soldier apparently committed suicide. Israeli officials said he shot himself in the head.
The shooting sparked fears of an assassination attempt. Sarkozy and Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert were whisked away by bodyguards.
Earlier Sarkozy called for the creation of a Palestinian state.
"The security of Israel is non-negotiable for France, but the creation of a viable, democratic, modern state for the Palestinians is a priority for France.
"We will work towards the creation of your state. We will use the same strength, the same commitment we used in ensuring Israel's security," said Sarkozy.
