A US federal judge has dismissed a pair of lawsuits arising from Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton's use of a personal email server when she was secretary of state.

The legal action from the groups Judicial Watch and Cause of Action Institute are among dozens seeking access to Ms Clinton's emails.

The organisations sought a court order to force the State Department and the National Archives and Records Administration to recover emails from Ms Clinton's server.

They alleged that government records were removed from the State Department in violation of the Federal Records Act.

The two cases, filed last year, were consolidated before US District Judge James Boasberg due to their similarity.

Judge Boasberg dismissed the lawsuits, calling the matter moot since the government has already been working to recover and preserve emails from the server.
