Lesbian sailors share US Navy's 'first kiss' homecoming honors
Lesbian sailors in the United States Navy have become the first same-sex couple to share the traditional "first kiss" since the country ended a ban on gays in the military.
Petty Officer Marissa Gaeta, 23 embraced partner Petty Officer Citlalic Snell, 22, to the cheers of onlookers after she won the right to be the first person to kiss her partner on shore in a raffle.
The couple said the moment had been "a long time coming". The US military's Don't Ask Don't Tell policy was lifted in September.
Citlalic said of their relationship: “We did have to hide it a lot in the beginning. A lot of people were not always supportive but we can finally be honest about who we are in our relationship so I’m happy.”
She added: “I think that it’s something that is going to open a lot of doors, not just for our relationship but all the other gay and lesbian relationships that are in the military now.”
