Malala given top EU rights award

European politicians have awarded their top human rights prize to Pakistani schoolgirl Malala Yousafzai, who survived a Taliban assassination attempt last year.

The European Parliament announced that 16-year-old Malala won the 50,000 euro (£42,400) Sakharov Award. US intelligence leaker Edward Snowden and a group of imprisoned Belarus dissidents were also in the running.

The prize is considered European Union's top rights award. Previous winners include Nobel Peace Prize laureates Aung San Suu Kyi and Nelson Mandela.
