Man dies in Discovery Channel station shoot-out

A man who took three people hostage at the Discovery Channel's headquarters has died after a shoot-out with police.

The hostage-taker had entered the broadcaster's building in Washington armed with a gun and with a number of canisters strapped to his body that were feared to be filled with explosives.

None of the hostages was thought to be hurt. The gunman was named as James Lee and initial reports|suggested he had fired a shot as he walked into the offices.

Discovery has previously been the target of a man called James J Lee who has carried out a web campaign against the channel and in 2008 held a demonstration outside the offices in which he tossed thousands of dollars into the air.

At his trial following the 2008 protest and arrest, Lee said he had been inspired by a novel,|“Ishmael”, by environmentalist Daniel Quinn and by former Vice President Al Gore's documentary An Inconvenient Truth.
