Man held in Iran over BBC broadcast

A man has been detained in Iran after broadcasting for the BBC's Farsi-language service on an explosion at an ammunition demo, according to an Iranian news agency.

The semi-official Fars agency said Hasan Fathi was held by security agents after he broadcast a live report on Saturday about a blast at the Revolutionary Guard depot that killed at least 17 soldiers.

The BBC's Farsi language service is not authorised to operate in Iran, and working for the network is against the law.

In an emailed comment tonight, the BBC said it has no employees in Iran: "The service spoke to Mr Hasan Fathi as an independent commentator, as it does to other independent journalists, academics and other public figures from Iran."

However, the network expressed concern about Iran "intimidating people who speak to us".
