A heavy storm in Portugal has killed an elderly man and caused severe flooding in the Algarve.

Authorities are cleaning up and counting the cost of the damage in the popular tourist region.

Police said they discovered the body of an 80-year-old man whose car was found submerged in the water.

Municipal workers, storekeepers and residents shovelled away thick mud and fire crews pumped rainwater out of basements in Albufeira, the hardest-hit resort.

The storm swept away cars, uprooted trees and washed away roads. Stores in the town centre were flooded with brown water almost to the ceiling.

Heavy rain also started hitting Spain on Monday, causing extensive flooding, but there were no immediate reports of injuries.
