Man loses China death sentence appeal

A British citizen yesterday lost his final appeal against the death sentence imposed upon him in China, human rights campaigners said.
Akmal Shaikh (53), from Kentish Town, London, who has bipolar disorder, will be executed later this month, according to Reprieve.
They claim the Chinese authorities have not taken his mental health into account when assessing the case.
Mr Shaikh was arrested on September 12, 2007 in Urumqi, north-west China, and charged with drug smuggling.
His execution is set for December 29.
