Man recovering after shark attack

A surfer was attacked by a shark off Back Beach on southern Australia's west coast

A surfer is recovering after being attacked by a shark off a beach in southern Australia.

South Australia state police said the 47-year-old man was surfing with friends and family off Back Beach on the state's west coast on Tuesday when the shark bit into his arm and shoulder.

His fellow surfers helped him to shore. He is in stable condition at a hospital in the state capital of Adelaide.

Police said they suspect the shark was a bronze whaler.

Sharks are common in Australian waters, though fatal attacks are rare.

Last month, a 24-year-old surfer died after being bitten in half by a shark off Western Australia.
