Man 'threw daughter, 5, off bridge'

A 25-year-old man faces a first-degree murder charge after police said he threw his five-year-old daughter off a bridge in Florida.

John Jonchuck Jr was arrested after a police officer reported seeing him throw the child into Tampa Bay.

Rescuers pulled Phoebe Jonchuk from the water but she died later, police said.

The officer was heading home at around midnight when he saw a speeding car and tried to pull it over.

Police say Jonchuck stopped on a bridge on the approach to the Sunshine Skyway and threw the child over the rail. He returned to his car, drove south and was arrested about 30 minutes later in Manatee County.

He faces additional charges, including aggravated assault with a motor vehicle on a law enforcement officer.

The girl's mother said she last saw her daughter on Christmas Eve.

Michelle Kerr said she was woken by authorities early on Thursday morning and informed that her daughter was dead.

Ms Kerr said Jonchuck had a long history of domestic violence against her, which was corroborated by police reports.

Ms Kerr said her daughter loved her father. He had custody of Phoebe.
