A mother who gave birth in secret three times killed each of her children because she felt they would be too expensive to bring up, a court has heard.
Frenchwoman Veronique Courjault burned one of the bodies and put the other two in a freezer, the court in Tours heard.
Police initially suspected that Courjault’s husband, Jean-Louis Courjault, was involved in or knew of the killings but later dismissed the case against him.
He had originally alerted authorities in South Korea, where the couple lived at the time, to the presence of the two bodies in the freezer in July 2006.
The couple, who have two other children aged 12 and 14, initially denied that the babies were theirs, but police officials said Courjault later admitted to the killings, telling investigators she had given birth in secret in 2002 and 2003 and smothered both infants. She also said she had killed another child in 1999 in France and burned the body in a fireplace.
A police official said Veronique Courjault made the confessions to an investigator in October 2006.
Courjault described realising she was pregnant late in her term and hiding it from her husband because they had not wanted more children for financial reasons, the official said. She sought no medical attention during the pregnancy.
Jean-Louis Courjault was present at the start of the trial.
Veronique Courjault, who has been in jail since October 2006, has told psychologists she felt connected with her first two pregnancies and spoke to the foetuses. That was not the case with her third, fourth and fifth pregnancies, she said, adding she did not feel them move inside her.
