Two young men caught cycling naked escaped charges of offensive behaviour, but were warned that they should wear protective headgear.
The pair, in their early 20s, were stopped at 10pm by Senior Constable Cathy Duder in the beach and surf resort of Whangamata, on New Zealand's North Island.
She said: "They were wanting to experience total freedom."
When she told the cyclists they might "experience total confinement" if they did not head home and get helmets, the duo turned tail and rode off.
Ms Duder added: "They were jovial young men who had not intended to cause offence."
