The death toll from a collision involving two boats on the Nile has risen to 17 after two more bodies were recovered from the river, Egyptian officials have said.

A passenger boat and a scow collided late last night near Cairo.

Initially, 15 bodies were recovered and four were rescued, and h ealth ministry spokesman Hossam Abdel-Ghaffar said the search for the victims continues today.

Prosecutor Khaled Abdel-Hameed has ordered the detention of the scow's captain and his assistant, accusing them of manslaughter.

Traffic on the Nile, especially near Cairo, was heavy at the time as Egyptians celebrated the Eid al-Fitr holiday following the holy month of Ramadan.
