US president Barack Obama has signed a bill that makes anti-gay attacks a federal hate crime.
The measure expands current hate crimes laws to include violence based on gender, sexual orientation, gender identity or disability.
To assure its passage after years of frustrated efforts, Democratic supporters attached the measure to a must-pass defence policy bill that scraps some costly weapons projects and expands war efforts.
