Police kill suspected drug baron
Colombian police have killed the leader of a major crime ring involved in drug trafficking.
Police said Juan de Dios Usuga died in a fight with police in Choco state.
National Police Deputy Director General Jose Leon said Usuga led the gang Los Urabenos and had formerly been a right-wing paramilitary fighter. Such gangs in Colombia include large contingents of ex-paramilitary fighters.
Mr Leon said Usuga was wanted for involvement in killings and other crimes.
Usuga was a lieutenant of drug lord Daniel Rendon Herrera, who was captured in a 2009 raid.
President Juan Manuel Santos praised the police in a Twitter message and said one police officer died in the operation.
Mr Leon said five of Usuga's men were arrested.
