A police officer and one other person have been killed after gunfire erupted near Belmont Racetrack in Long Island, New York.

A law enforcement official confirmed that the Nassau County officer and a civilian were killed near the Cross Island Parkway.

New York City Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly said the shooting occurred after police stopped a driver for leaving the scene of an accident.

He said investigators suspect the driver may have left the scene and shot another person nearby.
