Police thwart Kosovo car bomb bid

An apparent attempt to detonate an explosives-packed car heading towards Western embassies in Kosovo's capital has been foiled by police.

Police spokesman Baki Kelani said officers acting on intelligence stopped and arrested the suspect last night as he drove towards an area in Pristina where most embassies are located.

Mr Kelani said the car had a Serbia-issued registration number and the driver had a Serbian passport, but did not reveal his ethnicity or religion. Kosovo's ethnic Albanians are overwhelmingly Muslim.

Authorities have warned of a potential backlash from Islamic radicals after dozens were arrested earlier this year suspected of fighting alongside extremists in Syria and Iraq.
