The Philippine president says charges will be filed against those responsible for a factory fire last month that killed 72 people.

President Benigno Aquino III said that local officials and fire bureau personnel who ignored the rubber slipper factory's failure to meet safety requirements would be among those charged.

He said he did not want a repeat of the tragedy that befell workers of the factory and has ordered the inspection of some 300,000 factories in central Manila.

Mr Aquino said an investigation showed Kentex Manufacturing Corp in Valenzuela city, a northern Manila suburb, failed to install an automatic fire sprinkler system and a protected fire exit inside the facility.

He also said the city government allowed it to operate despite the absence of a fire safety inspection certificate.
