Rare blue diamond discovered

A rare and valuable blue diamond has been discovered in the same mine where the 530-carat Great Star of Africa was found.

Mining company Petra Diamonds said the 29.6-carat diamond came from the Cullinan mine, near Pretoria, the South African capital.

The company said the diamond is a vivid blue with extraordinary tone and clarity, and could yield a polished stone of great value.

The Cullinan mine has yielded some of the world's most famous diamonds, including the one from which the Great Star of Africa - part of the British crown jewels - was cut.

Blue diamonds are among the rarest and most highly coveted of all diamonds.
