With a fine disregard for the saccharine conventions of Hollywood, Russell Brand used his first major US gig to set back the cause of Anglo-American relations.

Hosting the MTV Video Music Awards in Hollywood, the flamboyant 33-year- old comedian shocked the audience with comments about the US president and urging people to vote for Barack Obama.

The comedian, who is virtually unknown across the Atlantic, left both his studio audience, and millions of TV viewers stunned, by calling George Bush a "retard" and urging America to elect Barack Obama "on behalf of the world".

"As a representative of the global community, a visitor from abroad, I don't want to come across a little bit biased, but could I please ask of you, people of America, please elect Barack Obama, please, on behalf of the world.

"Some people, I think they're called racists, say America is not ready for a black president," he declared.

"But I know America to be a forward-thinking country because otherwise why would you have let that retard and cowboy fella be president for eight years?

"We were impressed... it was nice of you to let him have a go, because, in England, he wouldn't be trusted with a pair of scissors.

"I'm famous in the United Kingdom," he insisted. "My persona don't really work without fame. Without fame, this haircut could be mistaken for mental illness."

George Bush was NOT Elected as our President . He and his Republican cronies stole the election, aided by our Supreme Court. I suggest that the comments made by Mr Brand were those that most conscious Americans might make also, although the word RETARD is offensive and calling George that is a slap in the face to those persons who are developmentally disabled.

Yes, Bush is a retard indeed. The US is a great threat to the world because they want to maintain their hegemony. I am totally opposed to terrorism of any kind from the dreadful 9/11 which can never be justified or any other Muslim terrorist acts, but the US in its history has murdered many innnocent people in many different countries for its own selfish interests. McCain, Palin and Bush are all retards and represent a great threat to the world.

I do want to offer my condolences to the people of New York for the dreadful terrorist act they suffered in 2001, but remember also the US has done a lot of terrorist acts also.

I just wanted to add to my comments below. As messed up that it seems, it might be better that a republican (McCain) is the next president. The country is so screwed up financially that the next president is going to be forced to raise taxes (Remember Bush Sr. "no new taxes, read my lips") or whatever, he was forced to increase taxes after Reagan's brilliant plan of lowering taxes, which would increase people spending more, which would bring in more taxes. That failed completely, so Bush Sr. was left to raise taxes or the country go down the tube. That is what is going to happen to the next president. It might be better for a republican to have to raise taxes, otherwise if it is a democrat the republicans will turn around and blame it on the democrats instead of the 8 years of Bush. If you are not from this country, really you will never figure out the simple thinking of Americans. They really go for "one liners" instead of facts.

You guys are obviously over estimating the American public. 6-8 weeks ago I would say Obama is definitely going to be president. But just like in 2000 & 2004, the democrats have managed to **** it up. End of story, McCain is going to win, I would leave this country and go to Europe but unfortunately the top dog in this country also affects the rest of the world so there is not point. What the rest of the world does not realize about Americans is, A)unlike most people, they will not vote for a person just because they are liked in another country B)they really have no idea about the world or even care about it C)they do not research, they just vote based on biased political adds D)this country is still highly racist(but blacks committing crimes and not taking advantage of federal programs to help them get out of poverty might have something to do with that)E)the democrats are highly incompetent when it comes to public affairs F)They voted bush in again in 2004. Get ready for McCain!!!!!

Sully,

A 'liberal agenda'? could you please explain to the ill-informed what exactly that means? while you are at it a brief explanation of 'small town values' would also be appreciated.

Mr Brand said what most of us think and say anyway, it is about time Americans had a reality check. The real problem is the MTV awards showcasing commercial fluff, I suspect the Rednecks who lap this up comprised most of the audience.

College educated Americans overwhelmingly vote Democrat. The Republicans therefore use anti-intellectualism as a political strategy to win the under-educated / insular / bigoted vote. Carl Rove is the mastermind of this strategy. Basically those who are least equipped to understand and form an opinion on complicated issues are deciding American elections.

I suspect Sully like your contemporaries you have a extremely weak grasp of liberalism as you call it. A nice Republican soundbite.

This was taken massively out of proportion. Sully's and many other peoples comments are based on 1 event in Russell Brand's career. Unless you are a right-wing republican, hard-core christian then back off. I'm sure he meant no harm. I would recommend you listen to his BBC Radio 2 show

If USA way of life is so superior to those they impose it on, why do nations people resist attempts to occupy - do they EVER wonder? Maybe its because despite still having the death penalty they still have very high crime rates (we abolished that yrs ago and our rates make theirs look atrocious), overcrowded prisons with a higher % of ppl in prison than any other industrialised nation in the top ten GDP, The people are the most obese in the world because of poor diets, a FAR GREATER divorce rate. The fake, self-serving foreign policy while pretending to be the so called police state of the World. Close, but it would be the columbian police lol +the drug running, society wrecking,self-serving Chicos are US best friends while wall street launders the proceeds of their death trade. Vietnam, The phillipnes, Hiroshima, Nagasaki, Korea, Cambodia, Yugoslavia. What a country to be proud of

I agree that what he said was out of order but whoever was hiring Rusell Brand should durely have watched some of his previous material and realised that he would provide shocking humour!! It's their own fault in my eyes! This world is far too PC!! For goodness sake, its a laugh!!!

I cannot understand how this freak has so much appeal in Britain. It was very apparent that he has a liberal agenda and I agree with those posters who stated that he took his insulting comments about the Jonas brothers to an extreme. It just confirms to me, yet again, the bias of the media and t.v. corporations here against their own president and country when selecting such a foul-mouthed individual for this role.

Billy for the truth - you are right on. If more of the monied, influential, public figures in the US would behave as the true leaders they presume to be, and say what they and most of are thinking, perhaps we wouldn't have elected Bush or allowed him to stay in office. Now, while there is a chance to right the wrong, PLEASE do your part to show Bush and Palin for what they are and will be if elected - simply four more years of the Bush/Cheney debacle, if not worse. Obama, an intelligent and well-spoken man with the ability to practice diplomacy, not just bombast and bombs like Bush and his bunch, is the best hope for the US.

Although he may have in fact, done more harm than good with some of his il-chosen words coupled with his peculiar demeanor , I still quite agree with everything he said about our national embarassment -- George Bush.

I do believe Brand was trying to be funny. I also believe his job as a comedian does not excuse him from using good judgement. I believe anyone visiting a foriegn land should show some respect to the nation and its people. Although many may not like Bush and many in the music industry may be liberal and anti U.S. anything....it is not a true showing of americans as a whole.

Look at it this way.....if my father were a drunkin loser it still would not give you the right to enter my house and insult him. He is still my father. This is still my country.

I don't believe any entertainer is a true showing of their native land. So, I am sure not all those from England act this way. The UK will always be a great nation. We all have our losers....we have Bush you have Brand.

The "one-liners" that the republicans use seem to work for them. Everything they say (low taxes, small government, bla bla bla) they never do any of that but they say it enough that if you ask the average American they will say the republicans stand for low taxes, strong defense, and small government. The Democrats also let the Republicans shape them.example, when Palin was picked the Republicans kept repeating that Palin chose to not have an abortion even though she knew her baby had down syndrome. I know there are some hard core pro choice out there, but I would be willing to bet that 95% of democrats do not believe in the right to abort a baby because of a disability. Weak on defense, yet Reagan pulled the Marines out of Lebanon after 200-300 of them were killed, they criticized Clinton for bombing Iraq, Sudan, Afghan.I really think we are going to lose this time, and I think the party really needs to change because we had everything going for us.

I'm a bit confused by country cuz's comments, which two wars did "we" beat them twice? Does that mean the "we" whoever they are beat the british 4 times? Perhaps the inbreeding is finally affecting the gene pool for 'country cuz' Also I think you'll find due the complicated voting system that exists in the US Bush was only elected by around 30% of eligible american voters. What happened to freedom of speech, isn't that guaranteed by the constitution? Russell Brand can say what he wants, you don't have to agree bu he is just as entitled to opinion as anyone.

The poster who stated that "Obama isn't educated enough to be President" is illiterate. Anyone who can read; knows that John McCain graduated fifth from the bottom of his class, and Sarah Palin went to six different colleges or universities during a six year period to get a bachelors degree. Obama is a double Ivy league graduate; Columbia and Harvard and was admitted on on merit and not legacy. John McCain and Sarah Palin are limited to one-liners, anything more might take intelligence
