Shoot gay people in the head, US lawyer Matt McLaughlin proposes in new bill

Matt McLaughlin, a Californian lawyer, has proposed a bill that would legalise murdering gay and lesbian people in the state.

McLaughlin’s bill dubs gay sex as a “monstrous evil that Almighty God… commands us to supress on pain of utter destruction”, and calls on gay people to be “put to death by bullets to the head or by any other convenient method”.

McLaughlin has tabled the ‘Sodomite Suppression Act’, which proposes to shoot in the head all gays “who engage in anal sex or sodomy”.

Under California law, anyone who pays a $200 fee can propose legislation without it being blocked by the state.

More bizarrely, the state’s Attorney General Kamala Harris must prepare a title and summary and submit it to the Secretary of State’s Office.

The proposal must garner at least 365,880 signatures within 90 days however for it to be included in the 2016 state ballot.

It also proposes to impose a fine of up to $1 million on anyone who disseminates propaganda or materials about sodomy, and up to 10 years in jail and a life time banned for California.

Not only can officials not block the bill, it is unlikely that McLaughlin will face disciplinary action on the grounds of free speech.

Nevertheless Democratic Senator Ricardo Lara, a member of California’s LGBT Caucus, said he would ask the state’s bar association to investigate McLaughlin.

“I support freedom of speech, but calling for state sanctioned execution of a protected class calls into question the proponent’s character and judgment,” he said.
