Sinn Fein top party for raising funds in US

Sinn Fein is easily the top earner among parties from the Republic fundraising in the United States, new figures reveal.

In the last year alone Sinn Fein has raised almost $400,000 (£255,682) on various events attended by party leaders Gerry Adams and Martin McGuinness.

The bashes thrown by Mr Adams include a $500 (£320)-a-plate ‘Friends of Sinn Fein' dinner in Manhattan's Sheraton hotel in November 2010 and a dinner in Bobby Van's Grill in Washington DC last St Patrick’s day.

Documents filed with the US Justice Department show Sinn Fein raised just over $1,550,000 (£990,652) in the last three years.

Due to a special exemption in UK law allowing parties in Northern Ireland to accept donations from outside the jurisdiction, the money can be legally funnelled to Sinn Fein north of the border.

Fine Gael hasn't registered to fundraise in the US since 2009.

Fianna Fail was registered between 1984 and 2003.
