Skiers rescued from stuck lift

US authorities said more than 80 people who were stuck on a ski lift at a north-east Ohio resort have been safely rescued.

Chief Scott Hildenbrand of the Hambden Fire Department said the lift stalled at Alpine Valley in nearby Munson Township around 2.30pm on Saturday.

He said about 85 skiers and snowboarders were dangling in chairs about 30 feet above the ground. Crews used ropes and a pulley to lower them to safety.

The rescue was over by 5.30pm.

George Shaffer, a manager for Alpine Valley, said it appears a broken gear caused the lift to stall. He said the resort remains open and plans are in the works to repair the lift.

He said there was no danger of skiers or snowboarders falling or the lift derailing.

Rescuers threw them blankets so they would stay warm.
