Somalis in contact with kidnappers
Tuesday, 3 November 2009
Somali officials are believed to have made indirect contact with pirates who kidnapped a British couple, as a team of hostage negotiators are put on standby in the UK to fly to east Africa in an attempt to secure their release.
The British Government says it will not agree to the payment of a $7m (£4.2m) ransom for Paul and Rachel Chandler demanded by their captors.
Although units of the Special Boat Service have been sent to the region, military chiefs have made it clear that a rescue attempt would be hazardous.
