Spanish opera star Montserrat Caballe convicted of tax fraud

Spanish opera star Montserrat Caballe has been given a suspended prison sentence of six months for tax fraud.

The sentence was the result of an agreement with the prosecution that avoided the need for a trial.

Ms Caballe will not have to go to prison as first convictions resulting in sentences of under two years are suspended in Spain.

The 82-year-old confessed that she lived in Spain in 2010 but was registered as a resident of Andorra for tax purposes.

Prosecutors said she failed to pay the Spanish treasury 508,468 euro (£370,000) in taxes on her earnings.

The Catalan regional justice department said that Ms Caballe was also fined 326,000 euro (£236,000).
