Strong waves caused by approaching tropical storm Muifa are threatening to hit a chemical plant in China, raising fears of a toxic chemical spill, the state media news agency has said.
Xinhua News Agency said waves up to 65ft high broke a wall in the north-eastern port city of Dalian in Liaoning province.
Citing soldiers on the scene, it said the waves could hit the compound of Fujianhua chemical plant where toxic chemicals are held.
Xinhua says residents in nearby areas are being evacuated.
Typhoon Muifa has been downgraded to a tropical storm and will make landfall later, somewhere between Liaoning province and western North Korea.
