Syrian tanks have fanned out across part of the coastal city of Latakia amid intense shooting there, an activist says.

Rami Abdul-Rahman, head of the London-based Observatory for Human Rights in Syria, said 20 tanks and armoured personnel carriers deployed around the al-Ramel neighbourhood as the shooting erupted.

The city has seen large protests against President Bashar Assad's regime.

A Latakia resident confirmed the military's presence in al-Ramel.

The government's crackdown has intensified over the past weeks, with troops storming several towns and cities.

Rights groups say at least 1,700 civilians have been killed in the five-month-old uprising.
