Thailand elephants 'kill tourist'

An American tourist has died after apparently being trampled to death by elephants in a national park.

The US Embassy in Bangkok confirmed the death, but gave no details.

Thai police said today that the woman went missing on January 13 in Kaeng Krachan National Park in the western province of Petchaburi.

Searchers found her battered body in the woods five days later, and it was likely she had been trampled by elephants because of the severe injuries. She w as travelling alone.

Police have sent the body to a forensic institute in Bangkok to determine the cause of death.
