The CIA’s magical Cold War spy tips

Thursday, 26 November 2009

The CIA hired America's most famous magician to write a manual on trickery, concealment and secret communication in the Cold War.

John Mulholland received $3,000 for tips on slipping a pill into someone’s drink, tying shoelaces to give under-cover signals and on the “surreptitious removal of objects by women”.

One copy survived and has been turned into a book, The Official CIA Manual of Trickery and Deception by Keith Melton, an espionage historian, and Bob Wallace, a former CIA director.
