Three people have been killed and 25 injured after a pile-up involving 95 vehicles on a foggy US highway.
Police said the vehicles were caught in 17 separate crashes along the mountainous road near the Virginia-North Carolina border.
Virginia State Police spokeswoman Corrine Geller said the injuries ranged from serious to minor.
Message boards along the interstate warned drivers of severe fog, but Ms Geller said the crashes happened mainly because drivers were going too fast for the conditions.
The carnage happened on Interstate 77 in the Fancy Gap Mountain area of south-west Virginia at about 1.15pm local time.
Traffic backed up for about eight miles in the southbound lanes, which is where the smashes occurred. Authorities also closed the northbound lanes so that emergency vehicles could reach the scene.
