Top Republican shot and wounded along with his aides
President Donald Trump has decried the shooting of a top House Republican as a "very, very brutal assault" and called for all Americans to set aside differences and pray for the recovery of the victims.
Representative Steve Scalise, of Louisiana, was shot yesterday by a rifle-wielding gunman at a congressional baseball practice in Alexandria, Virginia, just outside Washington DC. Officials said several other people, including members of Mr Scalise's security team, were also wounded.
The shooter was Illinois man named James T Hodgkinson. He was shot and has since died.
Mr Trump praised Mr Scalise as "a very good friend" and "a patriot".
