Three men who were painting graffiti on to a train in Portugal have been killed by another train, reports say.

Rescue service officials said the accident happened after sunset on Monday on tracks east of Porto Airport, according to Portuguese national broadcaster RTP.

RTP said one of the dead was an 18-year-old Portuguese national and Spanish broadcaster TVE said another was a 20-year-old Spaniard from Madrid.

Fire service spokesman Amadeio Costa told RTP that witnesses told police several more youths were painting at the time of the impact, but none remained near the site of the accident when emergency services arrived.
