The New York attorney general's office has ordered Donald Trump's charitable foundation to immediately stop fundraising in the state, saying it is not registered to do so.

The attorney general's office said any failure by the Trump Foundation to stop immediately and answer demands for all delinquent financial reports within 15 days "shall be deemed a continuing fraud upon the people of the state of New York".

Democratic attorney general Eric Schneiderman has been investigating Republican Donald Trump's foundation following media reports that its spending personally benefited the US presidential candidate.

The attorney general's office said the law requires a different registration than the foundation has for those which solicit more than 25,000 dollars a year (£19,000) from the public.

The Trump campaign said the foundation intends to cooperate with the investigation.
