The militant Basque separatist group Eta declared a permanent ceasefire on Monday

Two suspected members of Eta have been arrested, less than 24 hours after the Basque separatist group declared a permanent ceasefire, Spain's Interior Ministry has said.

A ministry official said one suspect, considered a computer expert, was arrested in a joint operation with French police in the southern French town of Ciboure and his girlfriend was picked up back across the Spanish border in the beach town of Zarautz.

The arrests suggest Spain will not let up against Eta, despite the ceasefire announced on Monday.

Spain's prime minister and interior minister both ruled out negotiations and said Eta's gesture falls short and the group must simply dissolve.
