Typhoon death toll revised down

The typhoon that ravaged the Philippines has killed 4,460 people, the UN announced tonight.

The world body said it received confirmation on the death toll from a government agency.

The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs released the figures, citing the Philippines' Department of Social Welfare and Development as the source.

The UN said some 920,000 people were displaced by the storm and a total of 11.8 million people have been affected.

Originally up to 10,000 were feared to have perished in the typhoon.
