A US air strike in Syria has killed a one-time German rapper described by authorities as a "foreign terrorist fighter" who had publicly threatened Barack Obama, according to US defence officials.

Denis Cuspert was designated a global terrorist this year by the State Department, and Defence Department spokesman Major James Brindle said Cuspert was killed during an air strike near Raqqah on October 16.

Maj Brindle said Cuspert was a foreign terrorist fighter and operative for Islamic State who used social media to take advantage of disaffected youth and potential Western recruits.

He added that Cuspert publicly threatened Mr Obama and German citizens and encouraged western Muslims to conduct attacks on behalf of IS.

Cuspert used the stage name Deso Dogg but ended his rap career in 2010 after converting to Islam.
