US boy, eight, charged with beating one-year-old girl to death
An eight-year-old boy has been charged with beating a one-year-old girl to death after she began crying when they were left home alone.
Police in Birmingham, Alabama, say the boy attacked Kelci Lewis last month after her mother left them to go to a nightclub.
Police spokesman Sean Edwards said Kelci's mother Katerra Lewis, 26, has been charged with the manslaughter of her daughter.
He said: "This is by far one of the saddest cases I have been a part of since I became a police officer.
"This type of irresponsibility from a parent is totally unacceptable.
"It is something Kelci's mother now has to live with for the rest of her life."
Several children ranging from age two to eight were left home alone while Lewis and a friend went clubbing.
Police say little Kelci suffered severe head trauma and major damage to her internal organs.
Her killer, who was not related to her, is thought to be one of the youngest ever murder defendants.
Lewis has been bailed and the boy is in state custody.
