A Chinese man cycles past the Drum Tower in Beijing, China, Saturday, Aug. 9, 2008. Beijing authorities say a Chinese man attacked two American tourists on the opening day of the Olympic Games, killing one of them before committing suicide.
An American tourist has been killed in Beijing in what appears to have been a random attack in the centre of the city.
A Chinese man pounced on two US citizens and their Chinese guide as they visited the Drum Tower monument in downtown Beijing today.
One of the US tourists was killed. The second tourist and the Chinese guide, both women, were injured.
The attacker, Tang Yongming, 47, of the eastern city of Hangzhou, then killed himself by jumping off the second story of the monument.
It comes just a day after the opening of the Olympic Games in Beijing.
Drum Tower, a major tourist site in central Beijing, has been sealed off and uniformed police are standing guard.

It is sad that this act had to ruin the opening of the Olympics and the lives of the victims and their loved ones. There is much suffering in today's world and if there is mental ilness involved, it is even worse. It is not just this incident in China, a horrible stabbing on a bus in Canada leaving a teen dead, an ambush at a popular swimming hole on the Michigan/Wisconsin border here in the US, leaving 3 teens shot to death by a disturbed loner, Pets are being discarded as their owners cannot take care of them anymore. A wheelchair bound disabled teen is left in a room to starve to death here in Philadelphia due to neglect. A young Irish mother is stabbed to death in her own home leaving several small children. When will it end? We need to become enlightened and conscious of the disturbed, the addicted and help when we are able such as speaking out about the unconscionable suffering in Darfur. God help us.
