Workers killed while clearing mines

The Taliban have killed at least 12 workers clearing mines in Afghanistan's south, police said.

Farid Ahmad Obaid said the attack happened today in Helmand province.

Mr Obaid said Afghan soldiers were now fighting the Taliban who attacked the workers.

Mr Obaid identified the company working on the project as Star Link. He said 12 workers were wounded.

Afghanistan, which has suffered decades of continuous war, is one of the most heavily mined countries in the world.

Those working on projects to clear mines often find themselves targeting by the Taliban and other insurgents in the country.
