Belfast's biggest summer outdoor music festival was brought to a dazzling finale last night as The Zutons rocked the city.

Thousands of fans brought Custom House Square to life as the Liverpool band, whose track Valerie was reworked by Mark Ronson and Amy Winehouse, took to the stage on the final night of Belsonic.

They were supported by Mercury Music Prize nominees The Go! Team, as well as Dan Le Sac vs Scroobius Pip, Delorentos and Belfast’s Skibunny DJs. Last night’s performance brought to a close three days of top acts.

Belsonic featured a host of international performers, as well as local bands and artists who transformed the square — normally home to skateboarders and office workers — into a state-of-the-art party arena.

The first night of Belsonic brought US alt rock gods The Flaming Lips to the city for their only Irish show of 2008.

The group impressed fans with a spectacular set, which kicked off on Monday with a memorable entrance from frontman Wayne Coyne as he ‘crowd-surfed’ inside a massive plastic bubble. The show saw Custom House Square transformed into a compact yet bustling 5,000-capacity concert venue.

They were supported by Mogwai, Dublin artist Jape and Belfast’s own duo Oppenheimer.

The fun continued on Thursday night when Coventry band The Enemy hit town with guests Reverend And The Makers, Future Of The Left and local acts Fighting With Wire and General Fiasco.

Following the cancellation of this year’s Tennents ViTal festival, due to the lack of strong headline acts, Belsonic is set to be Belfast’s main music event this summer.

Belsonic co-promoter Phil Donaldson said: “In putting together the production great care was taken to make every element as good as possible for the occasion and fully appropriate the space.

“We consulted widely, sourced the best options available locally and where there were gaps, we went further afield to complete the presentation.”

Belsonic organiser Alan Simms said: “I think Belfast is about to enter a really golden period for live music.”
