Asda's decision to abandon Black Friday is a welcome one

It is encouraging to know that the giant retailer Asda has decided not to go ahead this year with the Black Friday one-day sale which produced chaos last year.

It is also encouraging to note that some shoppers want no part of a retail circus where they become involved in stand-up tussles.

Unfortunately, some of Asda's competitors intend to persist by promising "jaw-dropping deals". Without doubt, many shoppers will welcome this, but in the long term it is to be hoped that all traders and customers will see common sense, and will search for their bargains with less naked greed and more old-fashioned dignity.
