A word about selfies, Miley Cyrus...

Selfie queen Miley Cyrus

When a drunken teenager tripped and fell over 10 years ago, little did he know he was about to change the face of modern lexicography.

The young Australian suffered a gash on his lip which he was so proud of, he took a photograph and posted it on the internet. 'Sorry about the quality,' he wrote. 'It was a selfie.'

And that was the exact moment the language of teenage girls and celebrities around the world was transformed forever.

Now the term selfie has earned official recognition from the Oxford English Dictionary after its use soared by 17,000% in the last year.

While it may feel like more, we can only blame Miley Cyrus for 16,000% of that rise.
