Smoking's cool image a drag

Is it just me or is there an alarming number of young girls taking up smoking? There's nothing worse than the sight of a teenage girl puffing away, thinking she's the coolest thing since Audrey Hepburn (above) when she's clearly not. I passed several girls in Belfast city centre this week, all in school uniform, none older than 14, all dragging away on a fag like an old man with a lifelong habit. They looked ridiculous. I had to restrain myself from going all responsible adult and pointing out irately the damage to their health. I was never a smoker but I did plenty of silly things at that age and I know what I would have thought of a boring old stranger sticking her nose in. So I left them to their plume of smoke in the hope they'll wise up.
