I'm in thrall to Nasa's Curiosity rover and the incredible pictures of Mars it has gifted us. I imagine Curiosity like Pixar's Wall-E, with big doleful ET eyes and a thirst for knowledge as heart-rending as that of a joyously excitable little boy on his first day at school.
So I couldn't help feeling let down when I discovered Curiosity has been involved in beaming Will.i.am's new song Reach for the Stars back to Earth. Nice idea to have music played to us from another planet, but to think that moment could have been marked by the emotion of Beethoven, the profundity of Leonard Cohen, the shock of the Ramones or even the otherworldliness of Ziggy Stardust.
Instead we got 'Why do they say the sky's the limit when I've seen them footprints on Mars?' Even the dumbest alien can tell you the grandeur - as well as the grammar - just isn't there.
